NEW YORK (AP) ? Apple is inviting reporters to an event next Wednesday in San Francisco. An image on the invite showing part of an iPad screen suggests it's to announce a new model.

The company has been widely expected to reveal the third version of the iPad soon, close to the anniversary of the launch of the iPad 2.

The invitation is for the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater, where Apple holds larger launch events.

Apple didn't provide any details on the new device. Various unconfirmed reports speak of a sharper screen and faster cellular broadband options.

It's not known when such a new device would be available for sale. Last year, sales of the iPad 2 began in the U.S. nine days after the announcement.

The Power of Support ? Savor Fitness and Nutrition

First, a simple question:? If you haven?t already, please go to Facebook (or click on the icon on the right) and like JM Wellness!? Why am I asking this right now?? Because I?m starting to finally realize the power of support, especially from people who care about you and your efforts.

Over the past month or so I?ve been letting it ?slip? (or just plain saying) that I?m working on writing a holistic nutrition and fitness (health) book.? For a while, since November actually, I was thinking I would keep it to myself.? Why would I want to do such a thing?? Well here were a sampling of my thoughts (and as many of you know, I tend to think wayyyy too much):

• It?s not fully written yet so I don?t have an exact timeline (despite my best efforts to nail one down)
• It?s only on its first draft so it?ll probably look stupid and no one will think it?s any good
• I don?t want anyone ?stealing? my ideas or thoughts

But the craziest thing has happened since I started telling more people, especially my friends, colleagues, family and clients.? They?ve been extremely supportive, everything from saying that I?m doing a great job to offering to read chapters for me and provide feedback.

Ironically enough I also just recently completed a section in the book on getting support for your health, fitness or weight change journey.? Another section also contains the ?five beliefs? of permanent success.? And as I write them geared toward a health and fitness audience, I realize that so much of the content applies to all of life?s pursuits.

We can?t do it all alone, or at least if we do, it takes a heck of a lot longer and is a lot harder.? That doesn?t sound like much fun.? So who cares if my book doesn?t have a specific timeline, it will be written and finished.? So what if my first draft is disjointed and missing information, that?s the point of drafts!? And finally, why would anyone who actually cares about me steal my ideas?!?? It?s quite ridiculous now that I think about it.? And now I want you to do the same as well if you?ve been trying to go at it alone with your own health improvement or weight change journey.

• Tell friends, family and colleagues about your pursuits.? You will get a lot more cheers than jeers (and if someone jeers you, are they really your friend?!?).
• Create a support system of people (name, email, phone #, twitter handle, etc.) that you can call when you are having a lousy day and are tempted to run to the bakery instead of the gym.
• Ask for feedback and insights from those who have succeeded in achieving the goals you want to accomplish.? Thank them for their feedback and if it resonates with you, take action!
• Join community groups either on-line or in-person.? That?s one of the best features of Weight Watchers for weight loss.
• Or start your own community group with friends and family members that may be looking to improve their health or fitness.? You don?t all need to be going for the same exact goal, just ones that require some motivation, accountability and guidance.

WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) ? For two centuries it rested a mile from shore, shrouded by a treacherous reef from the pleasure boaters and beachgoers who haunt New England's southern coast.

Now, researchers from the U.S. Navy are hoping to confirm what the men who discovered the wreck believe: that the sunken ship off the coast of Rhode Island is the USS Revenge, commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry and lost on a stormy January day in 1811.

"The Revenge was forgotten, it became a footnote," said Charlie Buffum, a brewery owner from Stonington, Conn., who found the shipwreck while diving with friend Craig Harger. "We are very confident this is it."

On Wednesday, Buffum and Harger braved the raw weather of Block Island Sound to accompany the researchers as they surveyed the wreck site. The Navy ? along with help from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution ? is using high-tech sensor equipment to map the site, a first step toward retrieving possible artifacts.

If they're successful, they will illuminate a critical episode in the life of one of the nation's greatest naval officers. Perry is remembered as the Hero of Lake Erie for defeating the British navy in the War of 1812. He was famous for reporting simply "we have met the enemy and they are ours" after the decisive Battle of Lake Erie in 1813.

Two years earlier, the Revenge and its 25-year-old commander were en route from Newport, R.I. to New London, Conn., when the ship hit a reef in heavy fog. The area is infamous for its rocky, tide-swept reefs that lurk just beneath shallow waters.

When the Revenge struck the reef, Perry ordered the crew to dump some of the ship's cannons to lighten the load. The mast was cut. But it wasn't enough to free the ship.

The crew abandoned the Revenge, and not a single man died. But Perry's career was almost scuttled along with his ship.

The South Kingstown, R.I., native was court-martialed, and though he was exonerated, his career languished. Until he was posted to the Great Lakes.

"He was a rising star," said David Skaggs, a professor emeritus at Bowling Green State University who has written a book on Perry. "But then his ship runs aground. Running a ship aground is not a helpful thing for your career."

Harger and Buffum found the shipwreck six years ago after beer-fueled bull sessions in Buffum's brewery. Both men were experienced recreational divers. Buffum was fascinated by Perry and by shipwrecks off the Rhode Island coast.

They obtained an underwater metal detector and calculated the Revenge's likely resting place by analyzing currents and the location of the reef.

"We knew where he was going, we knew the area," said Harger, of Colchester, Conn. "We sat around in Charlie's brewery talking about where it might have gone."

They dived twice in the area and left empty-handed. The metal detector didn't even turn up a fish hook. The third dive was the charm.

"I look ahead and see this long cylindrical thing," recalled Buffum.

It was a cannon.

Harger and Buffum kept their find a secret for five years as they searched the site for more artifacts. They turned up additional cannons and other items they believe came from the ship. The wooden timbers had vanished long ago.

They remain convinced they found the Revenge. After all, they said, no other ship carrying cannons from that period is known to have sunk in the area.

The Navy won't accept their theory until they have evidence that the remains laying 10 to 15 feet underwater are indeed the Revenge.

"We were of course interested immediately when we heard," said George Schwarz, an underwater archaeologist with the U.S. Navy's History and Heritage Command, which oversees the identification and management of sunken naval vessels. "If it is the USS Revenge, then it's 200 years old and it's an incredibly important part of American history."

On Wednesday, Schwarz and engineers from Woods Hole used a torpedo-shaped underwater robot to survey the wreck site. The data will take time to analyze, Schwarz said. Depending on the results, the Navy may return with divers to search for artifacts that might bear the ship's name or other evidence of its identity.

Naval shipwrecks remain the property of the Navy, but Schwarz said it's possible that any salvaged artifacts could one day be on display at a local museum.

Buffum and Harger said they're not looking to profit from their discovery, or earn a minor mention in a history book.

"This is just about pure fun," Harger said.

Their find already has inspired the latest addition at Buffum's brewery.

"We've just come out with 'Perry's Revenge,'" Buffum said. "It's dark and stormy."

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The scandal embroiling an elementary school where two teachers were arrested last week on lewdness charges widened Wednesday with revelations of 200 more inappropriate photos of children and that one teacher sent warmly written birthday cards and presents to students who participated in his "games."

The case of a third-grade teacher accused of feeding children his own semen in bizarre "tasting games" in his classroom over a five-year period has garnered international headlines.

It has also roiled the nation's second-largest school district, which has a sizable number of students who come from homes with illegal immigrants. Many parents at the school have said they have been reluctant to report suspicions about the teachers because of their immigration status.

The new developments came as Los Angeles Unified School District prepared to reopen Miramonte Elementary School on Thursday with an entirely new staff.

According to three lawsuits filed against the district Tuesday, teacher Mark Berndt sent birthday cards to some of the girls, asking how they were adjusting to the fourth grade. He also wrote warm notes such as "surely no teacher could ever have a more wonderful student than you!!" and "P.P.S. The Roaches Say 'Hi!'"

He signed the notes: "Mr. B."

The cards were provided as exhibits in the lawsuits, which were filed on behalf of three former students of Berndt. They allege that the district and Principal Martin Sandoval failed to adequately safeguard them against Berndt and a second teacher arrested, Martin Springer, who faces three lewdness charges in connection with the fondling of a second-grader.

Berndt gave one girl a CD dated Feb, 12, 2010, writing on it "Happy 9th B-Day ? Hope You Enjoy the Songs!" that included such tracks as "Never on Sunday" and "Gonna Get Along Without You."

An email message seeking comment from LAUSD wasn't immediately returned

Sheriff's investigators, meanwhile, said Wednesday they have found 200 additional photos they believe were taken by Berndt who is accused of committing lewd acts on 23 children from 2005 to 2010.

The photos were found late last week at the same pharmacy where a photo lab technician had first noticed odd pictures that led to Berndt's arrest, sheriff's Lt. Carlos Marquez said. The recent discovery brings the total number of photos to roughly 600.

Many of the photos involve children already identified by authorities, but there may be other potential victims, Marquez said.

Like the other pictures, the photos show children ages 6 to 10 blindfolded and being fed a milky, white liquid authorities believe was semen on spoons or cookies, Marquez said.

Berndt, 61, taught for 32 years at the south Los Angeles school, where the 120-member staff, from janitors to principal, was replaced this week amid outrage among parents.

The school was closed Tuesday and Wednesday and will reopen with employees hired from a list of recently laid off workers.

The old employees will be based at a nearby school under construction as they undergo interviews in a district investigation as to how the alleged acts went undetected for so long.

The furor over Berndt's arrest led two parents to come forward last Thursday to complain that Springer, who had worked at the school for 26 years, fondled two second-grade girls in his classroom.

Springer, 49, pleaded not guilty Tuesday after he was charged with committing three lewd acts upon one girl in 2009. Bail was set at $300,000.

Detectives said there is no evidence that the two men acted in concert.

More allegations of inappropriate conduct by other school employees also surfaced.

The mother of an 11-year-old boy told the Los Angeles Times that a teacher's aide, a woman in her 50s, sent at least three letters to her son in 2009, including one that said: "When you get close to me, even if you give me the chills, I like that. Don't tell nobody about this!"

The aide signed one letter "Sad Girl" because she was being transferred to another school, the mother said.

The mother said she went to the sheriff's department, which directed her to the school. During a meeting that included the mother, her son, his teacher and an assistant principal, the teacher's aide acknowledged writing letters and said she had a grandmotherly affection for the boy.

The aide no longer works for the school system, district spokeswoman Gayle Pollard-Terry said.

Parents at the school who are illegal immigrants have been reassured by sheriff's officers and district administrators that no cases will be referred to immigration agents.

Manuel Flores, father of a 9-year-old girl at the school, said he was anxious about even attending a parents' meeting at the school Monday night. "It was full of police," he said.

At that meeting, Superintendent John Deasy stressed to parents that no one will be even asked about their immigration status if they come forward to report a crime.

The district set up a confidential hotline for Miramonte parents who may be hesitant to speak directly to detectives.

Martha Escutia, a lawyer who represents several families, said fear is rampant in the community.

"One little girl told me she doesn't want to come forward because she's afraid her parents will be deported," she said.

After Berndt's arrest on Jan. 30, complaints about him surfaced dating back to 1994, but authorities did not act on them.

Berndt remains jailed on $23 million bail and could face life in prison if convicted.

NASA: Record number of astronaut applicants, but no spaceships

The space agency received more than 6,300 applications between Nov. 15 and Jan. 27 during the search for new astronauts ? making it second-highest turnout ever and double the normal response, NASA officials said.

NASA may not have space shuttles to launch people into the final frontier anymore, but that hasn't stopped Americans from lining up in droves for the chance to join the agency's iconic astronaut corps during the latest recruitment drive.

The U.S. space agency received more than 6,300 applications between Nov. 15 and Jan. 27 during the?search for new astronauts?? making it second-highest turnout ever and double the normal response, NASA officials said. The all-time record for most astronaut applications was set in 1978, when more than 8,000 people sent in submissions, they added.

Only a handful of the new astronaut hopefuls will actually make it through NASA's meticulous selection process. The space agency plans to choose between nine and 15 candidates for its 21st astronaut class in the spring of 2013. Training will then begin in August 2013.

"We will be looking for people who really stand out," said Peggy Whitson, NASA's chief astronaut at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, in a statement. "Our team not only will be looking at their academic background and professional accomplishments, but also at other elements of their personality and character traits ? what types of hobbies they have or unique life experiences. Whitson is also leading NASA's astronaut selection board for the latest recruitment drive.

NASA retired its three space shuttles in 2011 after 135 missions and 30 years of spaceflight. The three orbiters ? Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour ? are now being prepared to be sent to museums across the country for public display.

Currently, NASA relies on Russian Soyuz spacecraft to ferry American astronauts to and from the International Space Station, but the space agency is also encouraging private U.S. companies to build commercial space taxis in order to regain an?American human spaceflight?capability.

Meanwhile, NASA is also designing a new space capsule, called the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and a giant rocket for future?deep-space missions to an asteroid?or elsewhere. President Barack Obama has ordered NASA to send astronauts to an asteroid by 2025, and then aim for a manned Mars mission.

"This is a great time to join the NASA family," NASA chief Charles Bolden said in a statement. "Our newest astronauts could launch aboard the first commercial rockets to the space station the next generation of scientists and engineers who will help us reach higher and create an American economy that is built to last."

NASA announced its latest recruitment drive in October 2011 to rebuild the ranks of its?shrinking astronaut corps.

In 1999, NASA had about 150 active astronauts in its ranks. As the space shuttle fleet was retired, many?astronauts have left the agency?to retire or seek jobs elsewhere in the space industry.

Today, the space agency counts 58 active astronauts on its payroll, NASA spokeswoman Nicole Cloutier-Lemasters said. The next step for the 21st astronaut class selection board will select a shortlist of "highly qualified" candidates from the thousands of applications, she added.

"The next phase involves medical screenings and initial interviews," Cloutier-Lemasters told SPACE.com. "And, then the final ranking and selection. The final selection is expected in spring of 2013."

NASA's most recent astronaut class was selected in 2009, when the space agency added nine new additions to the U.S. spaceflying ranks. Today, those nine new astronauts have completed all of their training and received their first technical assignments inside NASA's Astronaut Office, Cloutier-Lemasters said.

"And one, Michael Hopkins, has been assigned to a space station mission and begun his mission specific training," she added.

Hopkins is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force and has been assigned to the Expedition 37 crew for the International Space Station. The Expedition 37 mission is slated to launch aboard a Russian Soyuz space capsule in September 2013, according to NASA records.
